6 Powerful Tips for Harnessing the Power of Habits for Success

If you’re like us and sad that the 2024 Olympic Games have come to an end, don’t worry as we’re here to bridge the gap with your weekly dose of inspiration before the Paralympics get started.

How many of you sat in awe as our Team USA athletes put on the performances of their lives?

What new challenge are you inspired to set for yourself? 

Creating habits for specific parts of your practice is a powerful strategy for getting into your Performance Zone.

1. The Post-Olympic Blues

For weeks, we’ve been captivated by the incredible feats of athleticism, perseverance, and willpower displayed by athletes worldwide. I’ve seen so many funny videos online with “regular people” being inspired to perform like an Olympian.  Except now that it’s over, I actually feel blue.

The inspiration they’ve sparked in all of us is the perfect kick in the pants to set a new goal for myself, or finally tackle that gnarly challenge I’ve been avoiding.  How about you?!

2. The Awe-Inspiring Performances of Team USA

The 2024 Olympic Games were nothing short of spectacular, with Team USA’s athletes at the forefront. From breathtaking sprints to record-breaking dives, these athletes demonstrated what’s possible when dedication meets opportunity. 

I kept hitting the rewind button and setting the playback speed to .50 because it was remarkable to see human beings doing what seems impossible to me. I could barely imagine the hard work, discipline, and mental toughness they practice day in and day out to get to this level of performance. 

Surely I could exercise a small fraction of that effort to go after one of my dreams.  The athletes of Team USA have reminded me that there’s so much possibility!

3. The Power of Autopilot

Behind every Olympic medal is a foundation of strong habits. For Team USA’s athletes, success didn’t happen overnight—it was the result of years of disciplined practice, relentless training, and the formation of habits and intentional practice. 

Whether it’s waking up early to train, following a strict nutrition plan, or maintaining a focused mindset, these habits enable them to get into their Performance Zone. 

If you’ve taken Wingspan Performance Academy or you’ve worked with Cathy or Ivan, you know that Autopilot isn’t “bad.” Creating habits in certain parts of your performance frees you up to deliberately and intentionally focus on the most critical aspects.  Habits and discipline in your daily micro-decisions and routines support you in achieving extraordinary outcomes.

4. Implement Winning Habits in Your Daily Routine

When you think about what matters most to you, where could you benefit from the power of habits?  The same principles that drive elite performance on the world stage can be applied to anything in our everyday lives.

Start by identifying the habits that have started to hinder your progress and those that are propelling you forward.  Tiny, deliberate steps are a perfect way to make greater gains.

Don’t laugh now, I’m currently working on drinking more water.  A tiny habit that will help me feel better, more motivated to put energy toward other things that matter.  What are you considering for yourself?  It’s going to feel amazing as you start building momentum toward your goals!
